Audi changed from using numbers to an alphanumerical naming system for its model ranges after the release of the A8 and A4 in Europe during 1994. The C4-series A6 is a derivation of the C4-series Audi 100 that dates from 1991.Devised in part by an ex-Mercedes engineer, the original 100 was released locally two years after its 1968 German launch.
Austere though it was, the front-wheel drive sedan garnered a faithful following with excellent interior space and exemplary road manners.
Initially launched as the 100 LS and powered by a 75kW/153Nm 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine mated to either a four-speed manual or three-speed automatic gearbox, the 100 lost its square headlights for twin-round units, an 83kW/137Nm 1.9-litre engine and more equipment from early 1974.
