Future models - I M MotorsMelbourne Show: IM Motors makes Aussie debutAustralia becomes second sedan and SUV export market for MG luxury BEV arm IM Motors4 Apr 2025 By MATT BROGAN MG MOTOR Australia introduced its luxury brand IM Motor to Melbourne Motor Show audiences last weekend, the all-electric IM5 sedan and IM6 SUV the first of a full range of models expected in local showrooms over the coming years.
As only the third market to introduce IM Motors vehicles, Australia finds itself at the forefront of the brand’s technological offerings, each model delivering purposeful innovation, premium finishes and high-performance engineering the Chinese brand says will “shake up the luxury EV category” while setting a “new benchmark for intelligent electric driving”.
“We are very excited to bring IM Presented by MG Motor to Australia,” said MG Motor Australia chief executive officer Peter Ciao.
“The technology, the luxury, and the performance of the IM5 and IM6 will astound drivers. I can’t wait for Australian drivers to experience the four-wheel steering capabilities, the AI technology and premium finishes within the cabin and the performance of these vehicles, they are truly remarkable.
“Australia will be the second international market, outside of our domestic Chinese market, to launch the IM vehicles. This proves the importance of the Australian market to our brand globally and the potential we believe the Australian market has when it comes to luxury electric vehicles.
“These are truly beautiful cars that will challenge the luxury electric vehicle segment. These models will begin arriving in Australia in the coming months.”
An overview of the engineering behind the IM5 and IM6 – which share a common platform – shows the former with a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 2.74 seconds and the latter 3.48 seconds.
Each vehicle features intelligent four-wheel steering for improved high-speed stability and handling, the IM5 breaking the Moose Test record in 2025 by safely completing the manoeuvre at an impressive 90.96km/h.
Rear- and all-wheel drive variants of each model will be sold locally, the IM5 in Platinum rear-and all-wheel drive form and the IM6 in base rear-wheel drive, and Platinum rear- and all-wheel drive guises.
The IM5 measures 4931mm in length, 1960mm in width, 1474mm in height, and 2950mm in wheelbase, making it comparable in size to the Tesla Model 3.
It offers between 457 and 1290 litres of cargo space and is offered exclusively with a 100kWh battery pack enabling a claimed driving range of between 625km (AWD) and 755km (RWD).
DC fast charging times are quoted at 15.2 minutes for a 30-80 per cent top-up.
The single-motor RWD variant delivers 300kW of power and 500Nm of torque while the dual-motor AWD offers 572kW and 802Nm. Top speeds are electronically limited to 220km/h and 240km/h respectively.
Measuring 4904mm long, 1988mm wide and with a height of 1669mm and wheelbase (common to IM5) of 2950mm, claimed cargo space of the IM6 is listed at 655-1640L depending on seating configuration.
The IM6 is offered with the option of a 75kWh battery, joining the 100kWh unit offered in the IM5. The duo is said to offer 505km driving range in base form and up to 670km when optioned with the larger battery pack and rear-wheel drive.
Single-motor (RWD) models develop 217kW of power and 450Nm of torque, with the higher grade RWD (still a single motor) developing 300kW and 500Nm. The dual-motor AWD flagship makes 572kW and 802Nm.
Top speeds are capped at 200km/h, 220km/h, and 240km/h respectively and charging times remain the same as for the IM5.
Initially, the IM5 and IM6 ranges will be offered with five exterior colours – Ares Black, Athena White, Rembrandt Grey, Raphael Beige, and Nevis Blue – and two upholstery colours – Dover Beige and Highland Grey.
Technologies include a fully automatic parking system, one-touch reversing (which can automatically reverse the car through 100m of its recent travel), and Rainy Night Mode, which uses AI technology and the vehicles’ 360-degree camera system to display real-time images of surrounding conditions via the driver’s 26.3-inch display.
Accompanying the 26.3-inch screen are a 10.5-inch centre screen and 20-speaker surround sound system, voice control, native satellite navigation, and “ultra soft” premium finishes.
Now available to order, the IM Motors IM5 and IM6 will be available in Australian MG Motor dealerships from later this year with full pricing and equipment details to be shared shortly. ![]() Read more7th of April 2025 ![]() Melbourne Motor Show a sell-out successTickets sell out as Aussie motorists rush to see the latest combustion and electric models26th of March 2025 ![]() IM Motors headed Down UnderMG luxury brand IM Motors set to make two-model debut at Melbourne Motor Show |
