Lower-powered Jaguar Type 01 confirmed

Second spec of AWD Type 01 confirmed as possible sub-$300,000 entry point to line-up

13 Oct 2026

JAGUAR has confirmed a lower-powered version of its new Type 01 four-door electric GT for the model’s 2027 production run, opening the door to a possible Australian entry price below the $300,000 announced for the 757kW range-topper.

While Jaguar has said Australian Type 01 pricing will start from about $300,000 plus on-road costs, it is not yet clear whether that takes into account a range expansion bringing lower-powered and potentially more affordable models.

Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) chief engineer Jon Darlington told GoAuto that the Type 01 would not be a single-powertrain proposition after launch, even though only one version was revealed at the sedan’s premiere.

“We’ve gone out and said the peak power is 1015hp (757kW) … there are two versions of Job 1. We’re going to overtly go with the Design Vision car as the first build … but there will be other power variants available,” said Mr Darlington.

Exact outputs, pricing and Australian availability of the second specification remain undisclosed.

The Design Vision uses one 260kW front motor and two 310kW rear motors for a combined 757kW/1365Nm and a 0-100km/h time of 3.2 seconds. Its 118kWh (usable) NMC battery, 850-volt system and 350kW charging support a range of up to 720km (WLTP).

JEA can support smaller batteries, and a lower-end version of the Type 01 could conceivably use a more compact pack with 500-600km of range.

A multi-tier Type 01 range may echo Porsche’s strategy with the Taycan, which uses one basic vehicle platform to span all-wheel-drive outputs from 440kW in 4S format through to a 515kW GTS, 650kW Turbo and 700kW Turbo S.

Jaguar has not indicated how wide its own performance spread will be, nor whether lower-output versions will retain the Type 01’s three-motor layout.

However, the Type 01 will remain all-wheel drive, even in lower states of tune, with Jaguar confirming it is not interested in a rear-wheel-drive specification.

Mr Darlington told GoAuto that Jaguar had considered deleting the front motor, but concluded a RWD Type 01 would sacrifice efficiency, traction and powertrain flexibility for little meaningful gain.

Counterintuitively, the efficiency case for AWD in the Type 01 comes at highway speeds. When cruising with little demand on the motors, the Type 01 can switch off the rear pair and propel itself using only the smaller, more efficient front motor.

Mr Darlington said modifying the Type 01 to be rear-drive would remove that opportunity while also compromising traction in low-grip conditions. Jaguar said the rear-motor deactivation system can add up to about 29km of range when cruising.

But a lower-output AWD derivative fits Jaguar’s broader commercial positioning.

Jaguar managing director Rawdon Glover told GoAuto the company expected the new-generation Jaguar to transact in the United Kingdom at an average of about £125,000-130,000 ($240,000-250,000), compared with about £65,000 ($125,000) previously.

This points to a tightly spaced, high-value model mix rather than every Type 01 being configured as a max-output hero car.
