Future models - Leapmotor - D16China’s Leapmotor teases LandCruiser rivalLeapmotor releases teaser images of a luxurious large SUV on Chinese social media22 Sep 2025 CHINESE car-maker Leapmotor has revealed a new large SUV that could target the Nissan Patrol and Toyota LandCruiser if it arrives Down Under, although GoAuto understands the chances of this are slim.
The Stellantis-backed brand, which launched its C10 electric medium SUV in Australia last year, followed by a range-extender version of the same model more recently, has revealed images of the new D16 model on social media in China, according to local outlet CarNewsChina.
There is some confusion as to whether the model pictured is the D16 or D19, with previous reports suggesting Leapmotor had planned two full-size models.
Regardless of naming, the D series vehicles will sit at the top of the manufacturer’s model tree.
While details are scant, the large SUV offers a silhouette that resembles that of the Range Rover, in what is likely to be a three-row model based on its size, however physical vehicle dimensions are not yet known.
Like the C10, the model wears rather attractive wheels, a sleek body and taillight that spans the rear of the vehicle, amounting to a stylish SUV that offers a visual mish-mash of contemporary design themes.
The model, as reported by Chinese media, will be priced from around ¥300,000 ($A63,850) and it is likely to enter production in early 2026, with deliveries expected by the mid-year mark.
Leapmotor has not provided powertrain details, with more information expected to be revealed at a technology conference the company is reported to be hosting on October 16.
Given the brand’s track record, it will likely feature either an electric or range-extender electric powertrain like its C10 stablemate.
If it does make its way to Australia, the model would compete most closely with the all-electric Kia EV9 (from $97,000 before on-road costs), Hyundai Ioniq 9 ($119,750 + ORC) and Volvo EX90 ($124,990 + ORC), but with a price tag likely to undercut its sparring partners.
It will also offer stiff competition for popular upper large SUV nameplates like the Toyota LandCruiser (starting at $97,990 + ORC), and incoming next-generation Nissan Patrol (due late 2026).
The new large SUV continues a global product onslaught from Leapmotor, underlined by its significant presence at the recent Munich motor show.
So far, Leapmotor has launched its tiny T03 micro-hatch, small SUV B and medium SUV C series of models globally, with the range-topping D series models expected to complete its line-up.
Undeterred by a particularly slow sales start for the sub-$50K C10 in Australia, the company intends to bring its compact B10 SUV here this November, with pricing and specifications to be announced soon
The B10 will be followed by the recently unveiled B05 hatch mid-next year.
Despite sharp pricing, starting at $43,888 in range-extender form and $45,888 for the all-electric runner, Leapmotor has sold just 381 units of the C10 locally this year, falling behind competitor models like the Geely EX5 which has seen 2736 sales across the same period. ![]() Read more11th of September 2025 ![]() Leapmotor B05 and B10 debut in MunichStellantis-linked Chinese EV brand Leapmotor unveils B05 hatch and B10 SUV in MunichAll future models![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Motor industry news |
