XPeng G9L large SUV revealed

Australian availability of XPeng G9L confirmed after Paris Motor Show debut

13 Oct 2026

XPENG pulled the covers off its new flagship large SUV, the G9L, at Paris Motor Show on October 12.

It will join the G6, X9 and Mona L03 Down Under though XPeng ANZ says pricing, specifications and launch timing will be confirmed in the coming months.

The first right-hand drive examples have reportedly already come off the production line in Guangzhou, China with the initial batch likely bound for Australia.

Reports suggest cars are expected to arrive here as soon as November after XPeng ANZ announced in July that it would introduce five new models locally within six months, the G9L part of that push.

At 5120mm long, 1998mm wide and 1788mm tall on a 3100mm wheelbase, the G9L is substantially bigger than a Toyota Kluger, Hyundai Santa Fe, or Kia Sorento it is likely to be cross-shopped against.

In China it sits below XPeng’s larger GX flagship.

The most unusual part of the G9L is its range-extender (REEV) powertrain. XPeng’s Kunpeng Super Electric system pairs a 63kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a dedicated turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that generates electricity and never drives the wheels.

The G9L is electric-motor-driven at all times.

Claimed WLTP electric range is 287km with up to 1200km combined.

An 800-volt architecture and 5C charging allow a 10-80 per cent top-up in about 12 minutes. Outputs are 430kW and 695Nm, for a claimed 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds.

XPeng says the engine uses deep Atkinson-cycle combustion, a high-efficiency generator rated at 92 per cent or better on the WLTC cycle, active cylinder-stop technology to reduce restart vibration, and active noise cancellation.

The company is targeting a difference of less than 1dB between range-extender and pure-electric running under specified test conditions.

An energy management system with 24 optimisation strategies coordinates the battery, motor and engine, favouring battery power around town and bringing in the engine on the highway or under heavy load.

“Drive electric whenever you can. Take petrol when you need it,” is how the company sums up the philosophy.

A battery-electric G9L will also be available, with up to 430kW and 695Nm.

XPeng quotes a 110kWh battery with up to 553km of WLTP range and peak DC charging of 540kW, enough for a 10-80 per cent recharge in under 12 minutes on a suitable charger.

European-market reports cite a 0-100km/h in seven seconds for the rear-drive and 4.9 seconds for the all-wheel-drive.

The G9L has nine airbags as standard, automatic emergency braking effective at speeds up to 150km/h, and stability support following a tyre blowout.

It underwent three years of testing across 26 countries and regions, covering more than 6.74 million kilometres.

The G9L has not been assessed by ANCAP but the X9 people mover, on sale locally since June, has just been awarded five stars, though it lost marks for touchscreen-heavy controls.

Underneath are double-wishbone front suspension, an H-arm multi-link rear, dual-chamber air suspension, continuous damping control and rear-wheel steering.

Reviewers who have sampled the car report the rear wheels can turn by up to 15 degrees, more than the Mercedes-Benz S-Class’s 10, and European reports quote a turning radius of under 5.5 metres.

Inside, the G9L is loaded with technology. Reported equipment includes an 8.8-inch instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch central touchscreen, an augmented-reality head-up display, an 8.0-inch rear control display and a 21.4-inch ceiling-mounted screen for rear passengers, plus a 12.5-litre built-in fridge and a 26-speaker audio system.

The front seats are covered in Nappa leather with AI-adaptive support, heating, ventilation, memory and a 16-point massage function, with a zero-gravity setting for the passenger.

XPeng says the self-adjusting system uses sensors and air chambers to detect body shape and fine-tune support.

Second-row seats are also heated, ventilated and massaging, with power adjustment and electric sunshades, while the third row (where applicable) has power adjustment, heating and a 50:50 split fold. Boot space is 466 litres in European specification, with a 109-litre front boot, and towing capacity is 2000kg.

XPeng intends to roll out its NGP (Next Generation Pilot) driver-assistance system in Australia and New Zealand during 2027.

Powered by the company’s second-generation VLA model, it is aimed at city as well as highway driving, with navigation-based assisted driving, automatic lane changes, traffic light and road sign recognition, and assistance through intersections, roundabouts and narrow roads.

Advanced parking assistance is also included.

Australian pricing has not been announced. In China the G9L went on pre-sale from 259,800 yuan, around A$54,240. European pricing is about €75,000 (roughly US$83,850), where it is built at Magna’s plant in Graz, Austria, and offered with six or seven seats.

The G9L arrives as XPeng is under pressure at home.

The company sold 241,111 vehicles from January to August 2026, down 10.5 per cent on the same period last year, against an ambitious 600,000-vehicle target for the year.

XPeng is positioning itself on AI and driver-assist technology rather than price alone, and the G9L will be the first chance for Australian buyers to try its range-extender technology if both powertrains are approved for local sale.
