New models - Ford - E-TransitNew Ford Transit PHEV and EV due in Q3Transit range grows as Ford introduces Australia’s first PHEV light commercial van26 Apr 2025 FORD Australia has further expanded its Transit Custom van range off the back of a bumper year, releasing pricing and specifications for the updated E-Transit Custom and Australia’s first plug-in hybrid, the Transit Custom PHEV, with both models arriving at dealerships from Q3 this year.
The local arm of the Blue Oval is on the commercial vehicle offensive, with a work-ready Ranger PHEV on the way, a hard-core Ranger Super-Duty in development and now an expanded Transit range that seemingly covers all bases.
Ford’s PHEV and battery electric Transit models sit alongside an existing range of diesel Transit Custom models, offering business operators the opportunity to begin decarbonising their fleets.
Both the E-Transit Custom and Transit Custom PHEV will be available in either LWB or Sport SWB configurations, totalling four new models with more powertrain options across the range than ever before.
The Transit Custom PHEV will start from $67,590 plus on-road costs – which is a premium of around $10,000 over a comparative diesel model – a similar price difference to that between the incoming Ranger PHEV and standard diesel Ranger model.
For those wanting all-electric credentials, the E-Transit starts at $77,590 + ORC, representing a significant jump in price over a diesel runner. Compared to electric light trucks however, which offer only slightly higher payloads, it’s a reasonably low-priced proposition for business buyers.
The powertrain in the new Transit Custom PHEV consists of a 2.5-litre petrol engine producing 86kW/209Nm and a single electric motor producing 111kW/320Nm, offering combined power of 171kW.
Ford claims WLTP-rated combined fuel use of just 1.7 litres per 100km, as well as an electric-only range of up to 54km courtesy of an 11.8kWh battery mounted beneath the floor.
On the zero-emissions front, the E-Transit Custom uses a rear-mounted electric motor producing 160kW/415Nm, powered by a 64kWh battery allowing for a range of up to 301km in long wheelbase form or 307km for the short wheelbase option.
Ford makes use of a Vapour Injected Heat Pump to increase range in cold temperatures, which recycles heat from the powertrain to use for the climate control, meaning the range claims should stack up year-round.
Good news for back-to-base operations is that the E-Transit can be charged from 15 to 80 per cent charge in around half an hour, using DC charging at the maximum rate of 125kW.
Ford has worked to ensure all Transit Custom PHEV and E-Transit Custom variants offer the same load space as their combustion cousins, with cargo capacity of 6.0m3 for LWB models and 5.2m3 for SWB Sport models, achieved by underfloor packaging of the batteries.
Payload for the E-Transit Custom is 1111kg for the SWB Sport and 11787kg for the LWB, while the Transit Custom PHEV offers 1255kg in SWB form and 1206kg in LWB guise, and all models offer a braked towing capacity of 2.3 tonnes.
Ford Australia offers a five-year/unlimited-kilometre warranty for all E-Transit Custom and Transit Custom PHEV models.
