Toyota launches limited edition Camry Intrigue to boost sales of the four-cylinder models8 May 2001 By JUSTIN LACY Toyota has launched a limited edition four-cylinder Camry sedan to help restore its sales volume in the medium segment. Based on the volume-selling Camry Conquest automatic, the Camry Intrigue offers $2500 worth of extra features over its donor model but is $900 cheaper at $29,990. Additional equipment includes ABS brakes, separate rear head restraints, six-speaker audio system with a single CD player, 15-inch alloy wheels, "Intrigue" decals and a unique grille with body coloured surround and grey centre section. The seats are trimmed in "Cosmos" Jacquard fabric that is also used in the Camry Touring Series. Only 750 examples of the Camry Intrigue will be available and come in five exterior colours - Diamond White, Magnetic Silver, Tuscan Red, Emerald and Botany Blue. The release of the Intrigue comes hot on the heels of last month's sudden fall in sales of the four-cylinder Camry, which is the top selling model in the medium segment and usually accounts for over 40 per cent of total segment sales. However, when the medium segment fell by 697 vehicles during April, it was the Camry that was hardest hit. It accounted for over 70 per cent of the lost sales, meaning a decrease in its monthly volume by over a third or around 500 vehicles. An all-new Camry is due to be unveiled at the Tokyo motor show in October, but we are not scheduled to get it until the first quarter of 2002.
