FIRST seen here in the redesigned 3 Series sedan launched last month, BMW's new R6-series inline six-cylinder engines have now filtered up to the larger 5 Series sedan. Also available in the new E61 530i Touring wagon launched alongside them in June, BMW's new 3.0-litre six-pack improves upon what many describe as some of the world's finest six-cylinder engines. While the upgraded 530i sedan now produces a frantic 190kW of peak power (and the same 300Nm of torque), the 525i sedan is now powered by a 160kW/250Nm 2.5-litre six. In an impressive feat of engineering, the new sixes increase the performance of both 5 Series sedan variants while reducing fuel consumption.

Family Tree: 5 SeriesBMW's current-generation E60 5 Series sedan first arrived in Australia in October 2003 in 530i guise. The top-shelf six-cylinder large sedan offered the same performance figures (170kW/300Nm) as its predecessor, as did the 525i sedan (141kW/245Nm), which was launched here two months later in December 2003. The first V8-powered E60 was launched here in February 2004, with the 545i sedan's new bent eight delivering 245kW/450Nm. While both six-cylinder variants have now been upgraded, the 545i continues unchanged, joined by the stonking new 373kW/510Nm M5.
