HOLDEN has bumped its Commodore SS performance flagship up another notch as a sports sedan with the introduction of a revised rear suspension for the VXII model, which includes extra links to better control rear-end "steer". The much-improved suspension allows more exploitation of the 5.7-litre alloy V8. The SS also gets some new colours, backed up by boldly coloured optional leather interior trim, as well as the improved set of steering column stalks seen in all Series II Commodores. With all this, plus a six-speed gearbox, it is a hard-to-ignore combination.

Family Tree: CommodoreTHE SS has long been Holden's performance leading sports sedan, but it took a huge leap forward in styling terms with the all-new VT model released in September 1997, the same year Holden's premium 195kW 5.0-litre Aussie V8 became optional alongside the regular 179kW jobbie. Another great leap for SS came in June 1999, when the Series II VT arrived with 5.7-litre Chev V8 firepower and 220kW. The VX Commodore brought with it an increase to 225kW and styling changes including teardrop headlights in October 2000, while the VXII model tested here continued the proven theme with only minor colour, trim and detail changes from August 2001.
