CONVENTIONAL full-size off-road wagons like the Nissan Patrol may be the stuff of archaeological research these days, but that doesn’t mean people are less fond of them. Stemming from the distant past where 4WDs were used to go places regular cars couldn’t, the Patrol today still conjures up words like “rugged”, “simple” and “gargantuan". Even an extensive facelift and further honing of the Patrol’s ability to deliver a comfortable drive experience can’t conceal the fact that underneath all the glitter is a very simple, very basic, very rugged vehicle able to do a lot more than what most owners expect, or need it to do.

Family Tree: PatrolThe Series II GU Patrol was a mild makeover of the '98 original, which introduced four-coil suspension underneath an all-new four-door wagon-only body that was larger in every dimension. The upshot was improved on-road dynamics and refinement levels as well as better off-road ability, increased security and crash safety and significantly more car-like cabin. It now featured a 4.8-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed semi-automatic gearbox - and while the thirst for fuel was astonishing, the entire package became an altogether more appealing one. A limited-slip differential was also added. And even in top-spec Ti, value remained the Patrol's strongest suit. That, and the ability to go where most other 4WDs can't...
