SOME would say that Swedish car-maker Saab has over-worked the Aero badge it’s been applying to its cars since the 1980s. But, although virtually every model in the Saab lineup since the original 900 coupe has included an Aero version, the concept of overall balance - rather than outright, stop-the-clock performance - has always prevailed. The new 9-3 version continues the theme, with perhaps the best balance of engine and chassis yet seen from the company. It seems a pity, though, that there’s no 9-3 coupe to do it justice.

Saab 9-3 Aero
Released: November 01
Ended: October 02
Family Tree: 9-3SAAB'S famed Aero badge has adorned a number of 9-3s (and 9-5s), including the three-door 9-3 Aero "coupe" and five-door Aero "sedan" that were sold in model year 2002 guise almost until the new 9-3 arrived Down Under, in October 2002. Both Aero hatches featured a 151kW/280Nm 2.0-litre turbo four, mated to a conventional four-speed auto.
