MG U9 ute edges closer

Incoming MG U9 ute covers off work and play with SUV-like comforts

4 Sep 2025

ARRIVING a little late to the ute party and still yet to be priced is MG’s U9... the same-under-the-skin as LDV’s Terron 9 ute which is priced from $50,990 driveaway.

In addition to the Terron 9, the incoming MG will have to face-off against similar size (largish) GWM Cannon Alpha priced from $51,990 driveaway, but not so-called full-size (American) pick-ups like the Ford F-150.

Other utes of various denomination are scheduled for arrival adding to the highly competitive mix in the segment.

Like everyone else, MG says its truck sets benchmarks in comfort and capability and is equipped with more key features “which promises superior performance with no compromise on comfort, on- and off-road”.

The model has a USP that’s sure to attract attention in its “unique” two-step electric folding tailgate for enhanced accessibility to the rear tub, essentially, a walk-in tub.

But MG will also have to deal with the unibody construction of the U9 that precludes it being offered as a more work relevant cab/chassis “tradie truck” which represent a large slice of the ute market.

Though it’s engine power and torque is secret at the moment, the U9 is equipped with the same turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine as the LDV Terron 9 rated at 163kW and 520Nm that will probably flow through to the U9 placing it in a strong position in the arms race against potential competitors.

The mill is coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission then to the wheels through a BorgWarner Super Select 4WD system with diff locks on both axles.

MG’s pre-launch U9 information says the model is “designed and tested for Australia delivering the robust strength of a ute, the refinement of a modern SUV, and innovation that sets MG apart”.

“The vehicle’s spacious and modern interior is formulated to meet the demands of Australian buyers,” says MG.

It runs a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension system which is a touch novel against the live rear axle/leaf spring standard and is rated at 3500kg (braked) towing capacity.

“We were determined to not compromise on driving comfort or capability,” said MG Motor business director Kevin Gannon.

“Multi-link rear suspension is only the beginning of the MG U9 story.

“So many unique features from front to back enhance the experience from its 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine and ZF transmission to our innovative two-step folding rear tail gate that means better accessibility and safety for business or adventure use alike.

“The MG U9 delivers the goods while keeping owners fatigue-free so they can better enjoy time with family outside of work. Australians no longer have to choose between performance and refinement, he concluded.”

The model meets EuroNCAP five-star safety rating standards that ensure full protection for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. Safety is further enhanced through the use of Bosch ESP 9.3 that integrates vehicle dynamic control, traction control and automatic emergency braking.

The ute’s body features high-strength body materials and is built to withstand challenging conditions both on and off-road.

On the comfort side, the U9 is equipped with “thoughtful ergonomics” and features such as a built-in driver’s seat ventilation and massage function to reduce fatigue as do the front and rear heated seats made with five-layer and four-layer comfort material respectively.

The cabin offers “premium” finishes and “immersive” dual infotainment screens consisting of a 12.3-inch digital cluster and 12.3-inch central control screen.

Constructed on a robust ladder chassis and treated with and advanced anti-corrosion treatment process, MG says the U9 has been benchmarked and purpose-built to endure Australia’s demanding conditions, delivering the strength, capability and versatility expected by ute drivers.

Further details including pricing, warranty, full specifications, delivery timelines and accessory offer information will be announced soon.
