New models - MG - Cyberster - RWDCheaper, rear wheel drive Cyberster arrivesSingle motor MG Cyberster to tempt sportscar purists with rear-wheel drive thrills?27 Apr 2025 FULFILLING its promise to launch a “pure” rear-wheel drive version of its Cyberster sportscar, MG Motor Australia has announced the arrival of a lighter and less expensive variant with a longer battery range that lists from $99,900 before on-road costs – a saving of $15,100 over its more powerful AWD stablemate.
The newbie, visually indistinguishable from a dual-motor Cyberster right down to the scissor doors, will compete with a number of sportscars such as BMW’s Z4 2.0i M Sport from $101,400 + ORC or perhaps buy a pair of Mazda MX-5s and leave money in your wallet for the petrol.
Also identical is the 77kWh battery pack used in both Cybersters, with the RWD model capable of a claimed 552km on a single charge – or 52km further than the AWD model.
However, the latter can deliver a potent combined 375kW and 725Nm output from its dual motor set-up for a claimed 3.2 second 0-100km/h sprint while the former can deliver 250kW and 475Nm from its single rear mounted electric motor for a claimed 5.2 second 0-100km/h sprint.
MG sportscar aficionados may prefer the rear-wheel drive model because it closer resembles the traditional sportscar formula – although the bonnet hides a storage area rather than an engine.
Speculation from various motorsport quarters suggest the rear-wheel drive model, despite its considerable power and torque disadvantage, may be the quicker device around a track because of its lighter weight and potentially more predictable oversteer handling that is more easily controlled in the right hands than a usually understeering AWD.
In an out-and-out drag race, the Cyberster AWD would no doubt take the chocolates.
MG Motor Australia says it designed the slinky-looking sports model to celebrate 100 years of MG vehicles, the Cyberster, “combining the heritage of MG’s famous roadsters, such as the MGB, while bringing EV motoring to the modern sportscar space”.
It shares the same skateboard-style platform as the MG4 and, according to MG Motor, “showcases modern EV performance while leading MG into the future”.
Upon the arrival of the new rear wheel drive variant, MG Motor Australia chief executive officer, Peter Ciao, commented: “The Cyberster is a beautiful testament to the history and the future of MG. The design is magnificent and the thrill of driving the Cyberster with the top down is amazing. The design team created a work of art that captures the eye of everyone.
“We are excited to launch an additional variant in Australia. MG fans have asked for the rear-wheel-drive model, and we’re excited to now be able to deliver this model.
“Driving the Cyberster brings a smile to your face, we hope the additional model will help more Australians share this feeling. The rear-wheel-drive performance and handling will thrill motorists, with amazing power delivered. You’ll love the feeling of driving the Cyberster.
In conjunction with the RWD model, a new colour is added to the Cyberster’s six-hue palette in Mayfair Blue across all variants.
The Cyberster, which has chalked up a total of 19 sales to the end of March this year, is backed by MG’s 10-year, 250,000km warranty and network of nearly 100 dealerships nationwide. ![]() Read more15th of April 2025 ![]() MG U9 local testing gets underwayThousands of kilometres of real-world testing to ensure MG U9 meets the Aussie conditions7th of April 2025 ![]() MG to launch U9 ute this yearAustralia to receive LDV Terron 9 based MG U9 dual-cab ute in Q4 of this year4th of April 2025 ![]() Melbourne Show: Important MG S5 EV debutsMG S5 EV to vie in popular medium SUV segment as early specifications revealedAll new models![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Motor industry news |
